Demeter’s Daughter
In Greek mythology, Persephone, daughter of the goddess of agriculture and fruitfulness is abducted by Hades and becomes his bride. In her mourning and search for her daughter, Demeter abandons her responsibilities and winter descends upon the earth. By special agreements, Persephone is allowed to ascend from the underground for half the year. The mask reflects Demeter’s memory of her lost daughter and the promise of spring returning.
